This painting depicts Mount Maragidik, which is located next to Apriltsi city in Stara Planina, Bulgaria. The name Mara Gidik means “Beautiful Mara” and comes from the legend of Princess Mara- The sister of Tsar Ivan Shishman. Destined for Sultan Murad’s harem, she passed throught these places on her way to Edirne. The princess wanted to look at her homeland form this peak, she climbed it, and from grief for the enslaved fatherland, clear tears flowed from her eyes. They gave life fot the Tuzha river and to the name of the peak and the pass east of it- Mara Gidik (Marine pass).
